RECOMMENDED QUANTIFICATION

Blood tests are one of the best ways to quantify your health and see what is working for you & where you may need improvements. You can ask your doctor, or it is cheaper to order your own blood tests on a website such as walkinlab.com and go to a local Quest Diagnostics office to have your blood drawn.

VITAMIN D

TEST - 25(OH)D AKA 25-hydroxyvitamin D

Be sure to get the "Hydroxy" test, NOT the other vitamin D test called "Dihydroxy" - it is a better test for overall vitamin D while the other is better to check your calcium metabolism. Ideal level of 60-80 ng/ml. Supplements can result in vitamin D toxicity but sun exposure does not, and sun exposure is superior because it also increases levels of nitric oxide, endorphins, syncs circadian rhythm, etc.

IRON

TESTS - serum ferritin (stored iron) and GGT

Virtually all adult men and postmenopausal women are at risk for iron overload due to inefficient iron excretion. Left untreated, it can contribute to cancer, heart disease, neurodegenerative diseases and other chronic health problems. GGT is a liver enzyme involved in glutathione metabolism and the transport of amino acids. GGT can be used as a screening marker for excess free iron and is a potent predictor of mortality.

BLOOD SUGAR

At home blood glucose meter

It is very easy and cheap to monitor your own blood sugar yourself. You can buy a Bayer Contour meter for around $7 and strips are around 25 cents. The Life Extension Foundation advocates for a fasting blood sugar level of 87 or below. This is an important test because an estimated 85% of Americans are insulin resistant, a significant contributor to chronic diseases.
