PASSIVE vs. ACTIVE SWEATING
Passive sweating is more effective than active sweating at detoxifying heavy metals and other pernicious toxins from your body. Research has shown the toxin concentration in sweat during exercise, active sweating, is actually quite low. Sweat samples taken during sauna bathing, on the other hand — i.e., during passive sweating — reveal high amounts of toxins are being released in the sweat. The reason for this has to do with sympathetic versus parasympathetic nervous system activation. Your autonomic nervous system has two states, commonly referred to as "fight or flight" and "rest and digest."
NEAR-INFRARED vs. FAR INFRARED vs. STEAM SAUNA
Traditional hot steam saunas help with sweating but do not penetrate the surface at all and there is no light therapy. Many incorrectly believe far infrared penetrates the skin deeper. However, far infrared saunas can penetrate 1- 1.5 inches whereas near-infrared saunas can penetrate up to 3 to 4 inches. The greater the penetration the greater the overall detox may be, and near-infrared can penetrate down to muscles & mid-depth tissues, and even to internal organs & deep tissues. Near-infrared also has the huge added bonus of photobiomodulation (see below).
Near-infrared sauna’s are also much cheaper than any other sauna. Far infrared sauna’s are more expensive (over $1000 typically) and also take up a dedicated space. A near-infrared sauna light panel can be setup in an existing shower/tub and moved when not in use. Finally, near-infrared saunas are much safer than far infrared saunas when it comes to EMF emissions. Some higher quality newer far infrared models have reduced EMF levels but the simple near-infrared lamp sauna still has much lower EMF levels.
WHAT IS PHOTOBIOMODULATION?
Photobiomodulation (PBM), is a term from the field of photobiology, which studies the biological effects – both beneficial and harmful – of light wavelengths on living organisms. PBM occurs when light photons are absorbed by living tissue, but not just any light will do. PBM is only possible within a certain wavelength range on the electromagnetic light spectrum: specifically from 600-1000 nanometers. This range is known as the ‘mitochondrial stimulation band’ (or ‘healing band’) because only these wavelengths of light stimulate the cellular mitochondrial light receptor enzyme, cytochrome-c oxidase. It thus encompasses both red light (600-700nm) and a portion of near infrared light (700-1500nm). When light from within this band of wavelengths is absorbed by the cells of the human body, the cell responds by increasing ATP production, releasing Nitric Oxide, and forming Reactive Oxygen Species – all of which work to produce large-scale systemic benefits to the health of the body.
